Private blog network is the hype in SEO world right now. It is the most effective SEO technique and a less spammy way to build links for your money sites. You see people talks about it in their blogs. You read all these information about how to set up, how to link build, how many domains, what metrics, link velocity, how long does it take to rank. While all these information are great and teach you step by step of what to do, all of these doesn’t matter at all if your PBN is been deindexed by Google.
2 years ago, I learned about ultilizing PBN links to rank sites from No Hat SEO. During that time, I have no knowledge about SEO, I didn’t even know you can earn money from creating sites. Now, i have established about 200+ PBN sites all together and about 32 deindexed sites. Now 32 de indexed sites is not a lot, but a few of weeks ago, 41% of my PBN has been deindexed by Google. This really hurts. This is why I would rather not reveal my PBN domains in the case study like I did a couple months ago. You get competitors spying on your money sites, and there are a big possibility that your PBN being reported to Google. But, if I don’t share this information, how would a newbie learn about SEO like i did 2 years ago from Hayden’s blog.
Setting up a decent Private blog network is no easy task, its all sweat and blood. I have made many mistakes, and also learned a couple lessons in this 2 years time frame. You can learn about all the tips and tricks of PBN, but the most important question you should ask yourself is, How to avoid getting deindexed?! All your above questions doesn’t matter if you can’t get it indexed by Google. With the most recent Panda & Penguin 4.0 update to combat spam, your entire PBN list are in danger of getting hit. Google don’t just hit one site, they all wiped your entire list in one go.
Here is an example of Google hitting my PBN list. I have moved the de-indexed sites into my webmaster tools and it blessed me with these encouraging emails. take note of the dates on the right, the Google bot hits the list one by one, day by day you are seeing your sites gradually been killed.
What to avoid?
Disclaimer: These guidelines are what I have discovered to be useful to me. I have learned from these mistakes 2 years ago. This is not what you SHOULD do or copy these techniques exactly. But it offers you a general idea about what is still working today and what not. Take note of these ideas, and see how you can improve or apply some of these methods to your PBN. Do what you feel best for your sites.
Google looks at your entire website layout. Avoid choosing default theme layouts, don’t just slap content into your default wordpress theme layout and expect it to get indexed. Even if it does, it will get de-indexed a couple months later.
Try creating a custom header, unique widgets. Unique widgets doesn’t equal to your recent post widget. I am talking about custom instagram widgets, facebook fans widgets with interactions. Each website has to look like a genuine user’s homepage behind the website with a representational design.
I know a lot you guys like would like to squeeze out a couple of dollars making money from selling links on your PBN because your expired domains has a high page rank. Google page layout algorithm is here to target sites with over overabundance Ads. You should make sure your sidebar, header, in content area has no Ads, no selling text links. Many ads is equal to low quality, spammy sites.
Number of Post
Some people may not agree me on this one. With more posts and content published on your expired domain, your site are more vulnerable of getting de-indexed. 5 post at most being safest and with more than 10 post you are in danger.
Why do i say this? Think of it this way, say if you have 5 pieces of content, all legit. on a website. You are less likely to be discovered as a Pbn and live happily forever passing link juices to your money sites. Because it is so small, Google are less likely to take notice of your sites and let alone de index it. What happens if you have 10 or more pieces of content on your expired domains? with 10 + pieces of content, around 500 words per articles, you are talking about more than 5000+ words , with more content and outbound links you built, it become more obvious to Google that someone is trying to game their system.
Everyone knows about hosting pbn in different service provider as much as possible. I have tried many hosting plans in the past, from the big providers to small ones. The tricky part is finding reliable hosting and give them a good home with 99% uptime so they can stay in Google index world forever. subscribing to different hosting plans, the cost of maintainence adds up high. Some people say to avoid SEO hosting plans, personally I haven’t had any issues with them at all. What really matters to me is their running cost, uptime stability and customer service.
Shared hosting – Safest from de indexation. Good for hosting micro expired domains (5 pieces of content) Very hard to manage C-blocks ips. Throw away sites and cancel hosting plan when the sites are deindexed.
Shared SEO hosting – Moderately safe, easy to manage different C-blocks and unsubscribe the plans to individual plans that got de indexed. (for hosting 10 pieces of content sites)
Dedicated SEO hosting – Moderately safe, super easy to add and create your own unique IPs. Very expensive maintanence and hard to cancel plans. (hosting around 300+ unique articles )
The idea here is SPREAD your sites on various hosting.
I have subscribed to this service for 2 years on an off. While they are many updates and now currently on version 3.0. There are no artificial intelligence claimed by the creator of this product. The turing spinner doesn’t cut it anymore in today’s Google eyes. It may worked 2 years ago, but now it is piece of junk.
People are so afraid of duplicate content in their sites and worried that they wont get indexed. Be wary of content written sites like iwriter, textbroker, hirewriters, odesk writers, they are known for writers that uses spun softwares to generate mass content. Sure, these websites has a copyscape feature in place to detect duplicate content. Even if their articles are copyscape passed, they doesn’t means shit! Copyscape is not = Google. It may seem unique by Google but it doesn’t mean it will pass manual review. Don’t rely on a third party products to judge what Google perceived is unique.
These writers are only there to make quick money. They are only looking to make a the most money in the least amount of time spent. You are not the only client that they are working for, in fact they are working on various jobs simultaneously while working for you! If you caught they are using spinning software, they will abandon your project and move on the rather naive clients.
Pure simple, if you have spun contents in your PBN, they are in danger of getting de indexed. It is best to hire a longterm or part time VAs that you can trust with their written work.
Too many outbound links
You are setting up a PBN, obviously for link building purposes. But you are also firing hundreds of outbound links to various sites per domain. This is such a big no no. I know we are trying to save some money by hosting the least amount of c-class domain and try to built as much links possible per domain. This is not the time to save money for hosting your expired domains. Would you rather see your expired domains getting de-indexed and having all the links built work been destroyed?
1 C-class site – with 5 links ( in good standing )
1 C-class site – with 10 links (still in good terms of Google)
1 C-class site – with 30 links (max links you can build per domain)
1 C-class site – with 50 links (you are overusing this domain’s metrics)
1 C-class site – with 80 links (you are killing this expired domain)
2 C-classes – with 5 links (2.5 links per domain) Safe
2 C-classes – with 10 links (5 links per domain) in good standing
2 C-classes – with 30 links (15 links per domain) still in good terms of Google
2 C-classes – with 50 links (25 links per domain) nearly max links you can build perdomain
2 C-classes– with 80 links (40 links per domain) You have overused this domain’s metrics
5 C-classes – with 5 links (1 link per domain) Safe
5 C-classes – with 10 links (2 links per domain) Safe
5 C-classes – with 30 links (6 links per domain) Safe
5 C-classes – with 50 links (10 links per domain) in good standing
5 C-classes– with 80 links ( 16 links per domain) still in good terms of Google
Get the idea here? With 5-classes, we are less likely to overuse our expired domains. with $2 USD hosting a C-class per domain is only $10 USD a month to maintain, I am sure your money site can cover this $10 per month and still get the benefits of 80 links, while 5 of your expired domains are still keeping in terms of Google.
There are various ways to build links from your expired domains, i have discussed about the anchor text diversities and various method inserting link technique in my previous posts. I want to emphasize that inserting links into author bio info doesn’t work anymore. Guest blogging, sponsored content, paid post, partner stories has a trust problem in Google eyes. This also cuts the ability of using author bio as a way of building links in articles.
Hand written unique content!
Unique content the Holy Grail of private blog network. This is probably the biggest mistake that i have made in PBN, i have used spun content in my networks. Because I have too many domains to look after, providing mass content to 200+ domains is an issue to me. At first I thought, the article in expired domain don’t matter as long it is copyscape passed. Since it is a link build site, the content itself in the website is not really a real site that a reader would visit. I got very excited, I have 200+ indexed expired domains on my list, I can pretty much rank any site with this huge network. Boy, I was wrong, eventhough hundreds of spun generated articles got indexed by Google bot quickly, but it only last about 8 months. It did not pass the final manual reviews.
I may have save some cost by using spun contents on my PBN initially. But looking at this in the longterm run, my network is gone, all rare domains are lost, wasted all C-class hosting cost, link build work all destroyed. It is not worthed, I should have used unique content instead. If you are looking at low cost link building technique, you shouldn’t be dangling yourself into private blog network. Private blog network itself is high mantainence, high expense way to build links.
Okay, I have make sure i have done everything correctly. But Why i am still getting deindexed sites?
You must be wondering, you have done all the correct method of setting up PBN. You spread out using different host, from shared hosting to SEO hosting. You used unique dynamic C-blocks. You have Whois privacy on your domains, or you used different personal information. You never crossed links between PBN. You used unique content. How is Google able to find out? My answer is, don’t even try to fool or trick Google. Building a single artificial link is already against the Google terms. Panda & Penguin 4.0 bot is used to detect these things. If you get caught, just admit it and move on. We can’t outsmart Google, we can only try do our best keeping ourselves in Google’s terms and guidelines and pray that we don’t get a manual review by Google.
